I can’t/won’t use an app unless it has a dark theme.

For over a decade I have patched windows with custom themes from forums like virtualcustoms.net.
They need programs UltraUXThemePatcher etc. to get shell & sys panels hacked. These create lots of problems.
But many of us thought they were worth it. Hence hundreds of black/dark windows themes for nearly 2 decades.
Microsoft has been hinting at dark themes for over a decade and promsiing recently.

The dark theme in settings for a couple years, never applies to the background on Windows' Explorer windows (ie: Windows showing fies). Just settings etc.

Now you can have it with a workaround. No need to mess with system using UltraUXThemePatcher or other hacks causing problems elsewhere.

1) First the minimal Dark Theme:
i) Right-click desktop: Personalize (bottom option, or goto settings by WinKey+i:Personalization)
[to personalize: your windows key must be activated as a legitimate install of windows]
ii) Colors (left panel): Choose your default app mode: DARK (bottom of right panel)

2) Windows Insider Program
i) goto settings by WinKey+i: Update & Security (last option)
ii) Windwos Insider Program (near bottom of left panel)
iii) Wait a few seconds until this button appears: GET STARTED
iv) Click it
v) There are 3 levels to opt in. You can choose the minimum: just fixes, apps, etc
vi) Update if not auto updating (might do a major update, currently to 1809, takes 10 minutes or so and reboot)

After this major upgrade and reboot, you are a Windows Insider Program member.
Sending analytics back to MS. The minimal level is almost no different to normal windows as few changes are available.
If you did not set your dark theme in step (1), do it now. Windows file explorer is now also sporting a blackish background.

3) Opt out of Windows Insider Program. Gives you a few extra features but I just do not like it due to sending analytics back to MS.
(There are many program to disable MS spyware even in normal windows, see link below.)
i) OPT OUT of Insider Program: Same way as section (2) when you opted in

Now you have normal windows and opted out. BUT still have black windows explorer and other dark panels not available to normal windows users, yet.

Do you miss the old windows uninstaller, instead of the new apps manager:
Right-mouse click on desktop : New > Shrotcut
enter:
C:\Windows\System32\appwiz.cpl
I put this and the old uninstaller in the root drive of my PCs, C:

Winkey & typing the first few letters of any section in settings (update or color etc listed above) brings them & even other sysadmin shortcuts up fast

MS "Night Light" is now quite good if not into f.lux.
Press Winkey start typing night and option comes up to configure Night Light.

Now, the latest Windows 10 update (1809) includes the full dark theme, for Explorer as well, and Microsoft is actually promoting it through "explore new features". Finally!

Google has finally turned Chrome dark.

This applies to areas where dark themes did not reach: settings (chrome://settings), history (CTRL+h), download (CTRL+j), menus, right-mouse-click popup menus (search engines for YouTube etc or other extension), etc.

First you have to update chrome to version 74 which is automatically doen by going to:

chrome://settings

then add

--force-dark-mode

to the end of your icon on task-bar (it's my first so WinKey+1 launches it) or anywhere else your usual chrome icon is so target of chrome icon has at the end of target --force-dark-mode:

so update chrome to v74
add --force-dark-mode to icon target
relauinch chrome
