Can you clarify what ‘perpetual’ license means in this case? My impression from Mindjet’s shop http://www.mindjet.com/uk/shop/ is that they do not ‘sell’ the product in the way they used to, but only provide subscription-based access. The price you mention is quite close to the normal yearly subscription.
I’ve seen other tools being sold both as ‘classic’ software and as a subscription based service, e.g. XMind http://www.xmind.net/pricing/ In this case however, the purchased license does not entitle one to updates.

Just came across this article on mind mappers. I’m sure MindManager offers some special extra features (Gantt chart sounds good), but the price difference is pretty big if you compare it to Freeplane…

Actually I just got another email from them in which they’re calling them “the new Mindjet MindManager Windows and Mac desktop products” and the “the latest version of MindManager,” so I’m presuming this is a new product then?

Looks like Celtx desktop (paid version) has some interesting new features (though haven’t tried them yet). Actually “Index cards with list view” is also available in the free version.
