When I evaluated Thebrain some time ago I was put off by the fact that the only way to sync was through the company’s servers.
Really, all my information unencrypted somewhere in the US?
I have no secrets to hide but my privacy is worth more than the usage fee to me.
Has this policy changed?

PS: no offence to anyone whose preferences differ from mine

You cannot configure a private sync / cloud service in the basic version—perhaps in the enterprise version, but this is not clear.
Information about security, sync storage, encryption, and privacy is not easy to come by. There is no publicly-stated privacy policy in any obvious location. The betas do not include a manual or FAQs. So, the only answer would be found in their forum.
Short story: don’t sync sensitive information.

Thanks for the answer, the privacy issue in combination with (to me) not so obvious ways to export the information were the main reasons I decided against TheBrain then although I found the interaction with the data intriguing.

Thank you for locating that.
Note—your data is encrypted only in transit and only via SSL. For data at rest (i.e., stored on their servers) the policy is silent and one must assume the default case that the data are not encrypted at rest. The policy is also silent about backups of your data that the company might make. In other words, transmitting data to TheBrain—like almost any other cloud service—is entirely at your own risk.
Which is why they say in their policy “To ensure the highest level of protection of the information you disclose to TheBrain, we recommend that you not disclose any sensitive personal information about yourself to TheBrain.”
