In version 0.9.92, Pierre has introduced a new view of data called “Surface”.
“IQ Surface: A brand new view of your data. Infinite sized canvas where you can put / show items. Expand / Collapse. Show / Hide items.
Sub-items appear under the parent item but can be pulled away for a more mind-map look. Fully integrated with the rest of InfoQube.”
A screenshot of this view can be found here - http://www.sqlnotes.net/drupal5/index.php?q=node/3856
I’m more of a grid and outline guy, and haven’t really gotten into the mindmap type data views. But I know that some people here do like mindmap programs, so you might check this out. I know Pierre would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks Jim,
I’m pretty much in the same boat as you… Always wanting to like mind-mappers but never really saw their usefulness. I’m more of a “outliner with columns” kind of guy.
That said, I’ve been using the IQ Surface for a few months now (pre-release testing) and find it really useful. It is easier to keep focus because of the additional second dimension and the item’s box size / color.
But the key thing to me is that it is just another view of items, so I find myself working at times in a “regular” outline, sometimes in the 2-D Surface. Either way, it is the real McCoy, not some “add-on”.
Being able to pull-out one or more sub-items to put emphasis on them (and later on snap it back to the parent item if need be) is great. So if I have an item with quite a few sub-items, I tend to pull out the one(s) I’m currently working on and snap it back in when finished. The handy thing is that when you collapse the parent item, there is an option to not collapse the items you’ve pulled out. This basically hides non-relevant sub-items, a kind of “sub-item hoist.
V93 will add some of the missing features (Ctrl 1 to 9 “to expand / collapse, line types and stabilize issues found in the pre-release of it in v92)

Looks nice. Are those Bezier curves? If so, Pierre, you might want to move the control point further away from the box so that the line doesn’t join the side of the arrow head (I hope that makes sense) - purely for aesthetic reasons.

The documentation for the 2D IQ Surface view is now online:

(not having decent documentation made it quite difficult to use this new feature)
The OutlinerSoftware crowd with a more visual appeal to information management should check it out !
