There is a subscription service in beta (i.e., free until end January)—SetApp
After the beta, the freight is $9.99 US / month. No mention of multi-user/family plans that I’ve found, so I assume that’s the per-person price. Includes a few top tier (IMO) apps: Ulysses, iThoughtsX, Marked, and a lot of niche utilities. Some of the apps (ChronoSync, Xmind) are the express or lite versions. You don’t get to keep the apps when the subscription terminates. Personally, I prefer permanent licenses over subscriptions, and this one seems to cost more over the long run than buying one-time licenses plus the occasional upgrade fee, but the economics might work for some.
They are not advertising tiers or lower-cost bundles, like Adobe does, but that might come in time perhaps. For developers, it’s another outlet. Maybe cheaper for them than the App Store?

Things like this are a bit chicken and egg. Unless they get lots of developers, users aren’t interested. But unless thet get lots of users the developers aren’t interested. I hope they have deep pockets!
