Unsurprising, but worrying. Makes me wonder if I need to hone my Evernote escape plan. Do others with thousands of EN notes have any good suggestions / plans for where to successfully migrate EN data (including tags, formatting, attachments) in the case the service is shut down? I assume OneNote can do it, but any others?

I've been gradually moving my notes out of Evernote into OneNote over the past year; I use OneNote Batch to make the transfer. It's relatively foolproof, though the notes do need some reorganizing and reformatting afterwards.
I continue to believe that MyInfo will have great possibilities once Petko releases the next version -- which he has been promising to do for a long time. My compromise solution at the moment is to put all notes into OneNote but to continue using MyInfo for a very long list of sources for my writing (books, articles, websites, etc.). Even in its present version, MyInfo -- with its tags and attributes -- is much superior to OneNote for compiling lists of that sort. MyInfo, incidentally, is also excellent for writing drafts because of its tree structure and its ability to export to RTF files.

How is that an indication for Evernote being killed, too? All the features of Skitch are in Evernote and Clearly is only needed for reading (clipping can be done with the Evernote Clipper) and there is a lot of (better) competition like Instapaper etc.

I doubt that Evernote is going to disappear anytime soon, but it does seem to be an increasingly troubled piece of software. Its current phase of retrenchment reflects that.
My own misgivings grew mainly out of an experience I had a year ago, when I was unable to sync the Evernote files on my second computer. That went on for four months (until a new version of EN was finally released), during which time I received only occasional, half-hearted replies from their help desk. I decided then that I needed to find an alternative (or alternatives).
But Evernote obviously continues to serve the needs of some users very well.

I find that, increasingly, I use Evernote because it clips well, and I can get it on all my devices.
Evernote's success has attracted millions, some of whom, like myself, subscribe.
The software has three weaknesses:
* Current tagging system is a step backward from what Evernote had in version 2, and should be restored to the original.
* Lack of metadata capability beyond the most basic.
* Evernote Windows waste landscape at the top, thus compromising a great feature - namely the ability to have a number of windows open simultaneously.
So far, EN has stayed synced for me, and is therefore convenient as a central storage container.
With the various cuts at EN, I wonder if it the company is being made to look more attractive for a possible takeover.. If that is the case, and even if it's not, I hope management soon starts taking a serious look at the program's weaknesses, and the needs people have to manage their information.

More turmoil at Evernote:

Yes, yes, I know this doesn't mean that The End Is At Hand for Evernote, but there is an unfortunate symbolism in the departure of the founder's son.
