WinCatalog is $20 on BDJ, normally $50.
There is another thread titled “WinCatalog” but it is mostly about things other than WinCatalog.

Mostly it is about file managers with customizable columns, but there is discussion of other disk cataloging programs. Some of them aren’t updated as frequently as WinCatalog, I notice.
I’m thinking I will go ahead and buy WinCatalog at the discounted price, but am wondering if anybody thinks there is a better choice out there.

I don’t believe it has true customizable columns, as I noted in the earlier thread. You can select which columns are displayed but you can’t create your own nor modify the existing ones. I just downloaded the latest trial and played around with the columns a little bit and that’s what I concluded.
It appears to be just a simple file manager, which is fine if that’s what you’re looking for. When I first tried it I thought it was going to be a database with customizable attributes.

Wayne, did you find what you were looking for? In xyplorer perhaps?

I forgot to say, I went ahead and bought WinExplorer using the BDJ deal. The user interface looks good, the website looks good. I was particularly impressed by Wincatalog’s ability to scan and store MD5 and CRC32 checksums for the catalogued files, and the ability to use those checksums to find duplicate files in the catalog, as indicated here.

That seemed to be an advanced feature that made the program a good bet.
There are many cataloging programs mentioned on alternativeto.net, but it some of them seemed like they weren’t being regularly updated, or were pretty limited, or were considerably more expensive than $20. So I went for WinCatalog. The ability to catalog files on an unlimited number of disks is very valuable to me.

Jim,
Yes, I’m using XYplorer. WinCatalog does have a nice-looking interface. Thanks for the update on its capabilities. It sounds like it’s a good fit for what you need.
