I came across a nice little note taker for OS X, NoteAway (http://noteaway.com) The basic app is free on the Mac App Store, the “Pro” version adds several features (mainly sharing) for $4.99. The app is activated from the menu bar. There is a PopClip extension to send selected text to NoteAway—that extension is downloaded from the Pilot Moon website. Notes are stored as RTFD. It is possible to merge notes, but the process is a bit manual. The TextEdit-style formatting bar is available when editing text. The note window can be dragged off the menu bar, resized, and configured to remain visible on top of all windows. No iOS version yet—site notes say it is “in the works”.
I’m a big fan of PopClip so anyone who provides extensions for it gets an extra star, IMO.

It’s a nice little app, but needs an iOS version to become really indispensable.
I’ve noticed that a whole lot of “nice little apps” never get used if there isn’t an iOS version. Take the fantastic Tree 2, for example - probably one of the best outliners out there, but without an iOS app. So I very rarely use it. Same goes, I’m sorry to say, for the excellent OutlineEdit. The outliner I do tend to use, although I don’t like it anywhere like as much as the two I’ve just mentioned, is OmniOutliner. Yes, because it’s got an iOS app (now a universal iOS app).
