Well, that looks interesting. Thanks for finding it and posting. With all those little boxes and forms to fill out I wonder what it would be like to use it for more than a small number of entries. Maybe eventually the author will add a graphical map for associating / linking entries with one another. But, Goozzee seems to hit a lot of the Zettelkasten buttons. Looking forward to reading more.

Hi,
I'm the guy developing Goozzee. Thanks for you interest about it !
I just want to warn you that the last Windows releases are awfully buggy . I recently discovered this bug : it crashes the program if you use it in "single user" mode (which is the default mode when you run it for the first time.)
So if you want to give Goozzee a try on Windows, please download release 0.13.5 right here : http://sourceforge.net/projects/goozzee/files/goozzee/0.13.5/
It should be much better. The features are about the same as the latest release, except that the reporting system is completely unstable.. But the rest works fine.
The multi-user mode is not affected by this bug, but implies setting up a mysql server.
Concerning your remark about a graphical map, I'm planning to add one, but I guess it won't become the main way of browsing the data : I think the actual mode is much faster. So the graphical mode would be an optional window, beside the main one...
I designed Goozzee to help me in my work : I'm a sysadmin, and when I need to retrieve some info, it's mostly in case of emergency, or during a meeting, so I need to retrieve it as fast as possible. I use Goozzee continuously for my work, putting every piece of info into it. In fact, I switched to "no paper", scanning every document and uploading it into Goozzee. I now have almost 800 topics, 1100 documents, and over 2000 associations. And I retrieve any info in less than a minute.
Hope this explains a bit what Goozzee can do...
If you have question / problem, I'll be glad to answer / help.
Kind regards !

Hi Michael,
Thanks for posting! When I open it, I find Goozzee is a lot less complex than it looks in screenshots. It's actually quite light on its feet! I shall play more next week (once current project overload is out of the way). And fortunately, I'm using a Mac ;-)

You're welcome !!
There is a user manual in the documentation directory delivered with the executable. It might be useful to clarify things (Goozzee has some powerful features that are not obvious at first look..)
And please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any question !
Regrads,
Michel.

I am running Windows 8 and the program crashes at startup, whether or not I run in single-user mode.
The bug is known, it appears here
http://goozzee.sourceforge.net/news.html
Looks like the same problem is there in Windows 7.

Thanks for the info Gianni !
I had tested on Win7, and the upcoming Win 10, but not on Win 8.
I'm working hard to fix this problem. But unfortunately, it's going to take a long time : fixing this bug implies reviewing all the communication between the main program and the database plugin. That's a huge work.
Did you try to install release 0.13.5 ? It might work on WIn8... It worked for me on Win7 and Win10.
Regards,
Michel

Hi Bob,
This is really weird : I just tested it again on my Win7, and it works !
The first time you run it and try to connect to the "default" database, it asks you if you want to create a new database. Did you reach that point ?
If you did, it could be some access right problem, when creating the goozzee.docs directory in your home directory..
Otherwise, I really don't understand what could be wrong...
I'm working very hard to have release 1.2 ready ASAP.
I hope this will fix all the possible issues....
Sorry for the inconvenience !
Kind regards,
Michel.

I do get the initial screen, with default pre-chosen, but when I click "OK" it thinks for a few seconds and then freezes. I've tried clicking the pencil icon and modifying some of the settings, even attempted to create a new database, but nothing seems to work. It could very well be a quirk with my system, if you're able to get it working on yours.

I already have an instance of MySQL running on my laptop (Windows 7) so I decided to just install version 1.0. Setting up the database isn't very difficult. It does give two wxWidgets debug alerts but after dismissing them it seems to run just fine. I successfully imported the Italian Opera map and everything works as expected. Thanks for the work on this!

Hi !
@bobmclain :
Normally, you shouldn’t need to modify any config (clicking on the pencil) : it should work right out of the box..
The fact that it doesn’t even propose you to create a new database could mean that it succeeded to load the database plugin ( c:\program files/goozzee/lib/database/MysqlEmbedded.dll) but couldn’t initialize a connection to the DB.
This database initialization needs two things :
- directory /Users//goozzee.docs/datafiles should exist (it is created by the program before trying to connect to the DB
- my.ini and errmsg.sys files should be present in c:\program files\goozzee\lib\database
Could you lease check if they’re present ?
I was also thinking about some firewall problem, but I don’t think Embedded Mysql uses tcp_ip : I guess it’s just accessing its datafiles. So a firewall shouldn’t be a problem…
Or maybe some access right problem that prevented it to create the goozzee.docs directory inside your homedir. But that would be weird : it’s your homedir, after all..
Or maybe your user name contains some weird characters that would screw my program ??
I’m really sorry ! That’s all I can think of for now..
@CRC :
Thanks for your time and your feedback ! Please let me know what you like/dislike and the features you’d like to see implemented !

Dammit ! part of my post has been eaten up....
I wanted to write :
- directory /Users/your_windows_user_name/goozzee.docs/datafiles
should exist (it is created by the program before trying to connect to
the DB
