I spent an hour or so with the beta version, and SmartDown II is quite different from the first. The screenshots Dr. Andus links to tell the tale. Although I haven’t used either, the Snippets look a lot like Scrivener and Ulysses - except that SDII doesn’t allow you (at least, I haven’t figured it out yet) to reorder them. But the editor itself is better and more customizable in appearance. Worth a look.
