New ADM Build

This morning I received an email from Eric that was addressed to a large number of people, presumably the people on the former ADM Fan Yahoo group, announcing that ADM beta build 476 was available, and that ADM was nearing completion of its work prior to final release of ADM4.

I hope that this and following communication and action from ADM will prove me wrong in what I wrote yesterday on the other ADM thread.

Thanks Daly - This is good news. I am going to start using ADM again - it does have a number of unique capabilities that make it quite compelling now that it seems its future is looking more certain...

I particularly needed its ability to:

Rapidly autoregister large numbers of files
View all common doc types in the internal tabbed browser
Browse the web internally (including usie Google Desktop Search inside ADM)
Save web pages directly from its browser as mht web archives to disk - then attach them to a Topic
Easily build and organize a whole set of interelated notes around that - and be able to easily find anything with its full text search
Excellent metadata for annotating/organizing/re-locating everything

I generally like to keep all my saved web pages, ppt, xls, .doc, pdf etc files on disk because there is no PIM product that can search as well as X1 or the likes - then once I've found what I'm looking for, quickly link it into ADM - and then view it internally thereafter....

and so on and so forth....

Ian, you're welcome.

Unfortunately for me the problem that caused me to stop using ADM back in early summer, that is some bizarre behaviour affecting my ability to work with metadata tagas has not been dealt with because Arne was not able to duplicate the problem. I have asked Eric about the possibility of ADM code having become corrupted on my machine, and how I might best do a new install without losing data and existing columns.

I sincerely hope that ADM cleans up its program, but I think I surely choke if I see one more mention of Skype.

I also hope that ADM makes it a priority to bring its web site into line of good business practice, and deal with the issue of people paying for betas.

This is a v good point. I believe you have a good relationship and high opinion (integrity) of Eric, so would you care to drop Eric a friendly private note and query what is going on here for all our peace of minds?

Best Regards, Ian

Ian, I have previously made Eric aware of my thoughts re the web site and the betas, and I also emailed him on the ADM Developer group asking him to follow the previous thread on this site regarding ADM and my comments yesterday. I hope that he has done that.

Daly,

I did not get the email you are referring to, and I'm worried about whether I will get the v.4 that I paid for.
I was a member of ADM_Fans and I've registered ADM and paid for the beta version, so I'm not sure what list you're on that I'm not.
If you have any way of contacting Eric or getting support from ADM, can you post it? You mentioned a "developer list" - what list is that? I have emailed support@adm21.net twice since the yahoo group disappeared, and have gotten zero response.

I use ADM very heavily all day long - I'm totally dependant on it and I haven't found any suitable replacement, so I'm getting kind of worried.

Dan,

The group is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ADMDevelopment/ - but it is invitation only. Maybe you could email Eric directly and be added to the list. Try using "staff" instead of "support" for the ADM email address.

Dan, I am sorry you did not receive a response. I have sent an email to Eric, quoting your post, and asking him to respond to your note here. I did not provide your email address because I did not have your permission to use your address on another list. I hope you hear from him soon.

Thanks Daly and Chris.

I signed up for the Development yahoo Group, but haven't gotten admitted yet. Daly, you can definitely give Eric my email address. In the meantime, it looks like you have a good forum here for me to learn about alternatives.

Dan, I guess I am not very observant.

I just realized our email addresses do not show up here, so I don't knows yours to send Eric.

Sorry about that.

Chris, who runs the software this site is based on may have access to your email address, and he could send it to Eric, or to me and I could then pass it on to Eric.

Alternatives to ADM would be MDE InfoHandler, Zoot, UltraRecall, Ariadne, InfoSelect (I would not recommend this product), etc.

Daly. I don't know about you but one *major* difference between ADM & Zoot is that ADM does *not* search across files. Zoot does this with ease. And, of courxe, there is the intelligent assignment by synonyms -- a legacy from Agenda days.

It doesn't mean that ADM won't evrentually have these things but for an info handler I think being able to search across files -- is *kinda* important if, like me, you don't dump everything into one file.

OTOH, ADM has some nifty features not found elsewhere & I use it every day.

Jan, the ability to search across files is a critical one.

For example, on both ADM and Zoot, I have a planning file and a project file, but references relevant to a particular project can be found in both files.

Similarly, depending on context, an individual's name might show up in several files -- if I want all references to an individual, therefore it is a time-saver to be able to search across files. MDE InfoHandler does have this attribute as well.

What puzzles me is why the folks at ADM don't think so or, conversely, if they do, why they haven't implemented it yet. Seems like a pretty basic request to make of a premier info handler. I guess it's just another of those ADM imponderables......
