Does anybody know of any web-based or portable (iOS or Android) task apps that allow an item to be visible in different views without using tags? I am thinking of something like what Ecco offered where one item was visible in several views (folders in Ecco). Are tags the only way to accomplish this today in web/cloud/portable task apps?

The Hit List for iPhone has “Smart Folders” that can use all manner of search criteria in addition to tags (which are optional). However, I don’t recall at the moment whether it’s possible to edit the Smart Folders from the iOS app—-it may be that you need the Mac desktop version to edit the Smart Folders (so you would also need to pay for a syncing subscription). When I had a functioning iOS device, I found that this set-up was well worth the price, and I miss it now that I am on Android for mobile, although I still use the Mac version of The Hit List. (By the way, the The Hit List finally has found some new funding, so future development prospects are looking better.)

What I particularly like about the Hit List is its card view, where you can note down a great deal; this makes it useful for me as to-do list/note-taking-on-the-spur application for long-form writing. I also like its unfussy, un-distracting appearance. What I’ve liked less in the past has been the tendency for its development to ‘go to sleep’ for substantial slabs of time. I hope the new money and new ownership will ensure that this doesn’t happen again, and wish it well.

Thank you for the suggestion. It looks like an interesting program, but right now it is only available for the iPhone and Macs. It also sounds like there is some transition still in play with respect to their merger, it is not clear when/if they will release an iPad version of their software. I could use the current version, but I would like a bit more real estate if I do not have a web-based counterpart.

Well, I just found out that Asana will allow a task to be present in multiple projects. I am going to have another look at the program to see if I can make it work for me. I wish Trello would provide such a feature as it offers many other useful features that I like.
