from MS:
A filename cannot contain any of the following characters:
\ / : * ? ”
< >|
Which means that many other special chars can be used without any prob. It’s important here to have the MS list in mind, since in the web, there are many such lists that unnecessarily list many more such chars as unavailbe for Win file names (seem that in ancient times, they were not allowed, and such false info survives for ages).

Back to WC:
It does NOT seem to be possible to “update” any db, automatically.
Example: You catalog an external disk: WC will create a catalog; that will take 30 minutes or more: ok.
Then, you will have a “life” tree for these files there, since the catalog is a db, accessible by a tree outline, and visually appealing: so far, so (very) good!
Then, you add files to that external hdd, for example (let alone renames, moves, deletions…), and of course, you would like to have them included into your db, without the whole structure of that drive being read again (30 min. or more again?! huh???).
(I’m speaking of external media because for hdd’s and sticks always connected, you could simply use any file manager of your choice; it’s when media get disconnected that tools like WC become of potential high interest.)
No chance. And when you select “Select files for adding to the catalog”: then a *.* does NOT work
(And it would have been to be seen if WC then would have been able to selectively import just new files there, or if that command would have triggered overwriting of all existant entries.)
So this prog is a complete fail.
But under “Help and Support”, there is “Facebook”, “Twitter” and “Google Plus” - some developers are just plain childish: Instead of thinking real-life functionality, they just think “community”, “social media”, and sharing rubbish (and which is not even cheap in this case).
Well, I crave for a live expanding-recollapsing tree (as in my file manager) for drives, even when they are NOT connected, and I would have been willing to pay 50 bucks (or was it euro?) for that experience. But I’m not willing to wait for the db to be built up from scratch, each time I dare to add some new file.
It’s outrageous how bad expensive sw can be.
( And here, for once, MS is NOT the culprit. ;-) )

I’m not into diffamation; whenever I error, I’m eager to rectify asap.
WinCatalog is on bits again (I had not been aware it had been there in 2010, and then again in Sept, 2013), so I read the “Older comments” there, and in the very last one there, the developer claims that “Updating” a collection will take no time. So I re-installed this program, and tried again (last time, more than 10.000 files on an external hard disk, about half an hour); I must admit that I have some probs with applics that have ribbons instead of proper menus, and the help file (into which I looked then) was no real help - perhaps my fault again, doesn’t matter.
Today again, I just did it wrong, both alternatives: “Main - Adding - Disk”, and “Adding - File Items - Disk”: updating was (with just a few new items), just SOME minutes speeded-up (I had preserved, by inadvertancy, the original db), about 21 min. instead of 31, originally: all this being unacceptable.
Because of the developer’s claims, I then checked and re-checked that awful ribbon, and it took me some GOOD time to detect “Managing” - “File Items - Update” (whilst I had looked into “Managing” several times before…), but heureka, at last.
So I tried this: not even 20 seconds!
Hence, my posting a recommendation on bits, in some minutes from now, and I’ll certainly by this fine prog myself there!
So, there’s a world between updating times of more than 20 min. or just 20 sec., and I’m very happy with this program now!

thanks 22111, I hadn’t noticed it on bits that but will have a look now.

I hope it’s not considered bad form to add info to an old thread. There was a long discussion here about programs that have customizable columns. I just wanted to add that Donald was nice enough to do the work required to add customizable columns to XYplorer. It was completely my fault for making note of this a long time ago so that someone looking for this feature can give XYplorer a try. It’s a great program.
