Craig Scott of toketaWare -- author of the excellent iThoughtsHD app on IOS -- has released iThoughtsX for Mac. A very nice port of iThoughts to the desktop. If Craig's dedication to continuous improvement on the IOS side is an indicator here, then I would expect iThoughtsX will also be improving quite a bit. One area that needs work is export to formats that can be imported to other mapping and outlining apps. I'm sure that there will be development on that front soon.

iThoughts on the iPad is a great app and many say it is the best mind mapper. Plus, Craig Scott is very responsive via email and seems to be a developer interested in continuous improvement. I cannot say enough good about him and iThoughts and am glad I have it on my iPad, at least.

A nice-looking, relatively simple piece of software - and good to have a desktop programme to sync with the iOS app. Re export formats, the biggest need is OPML, in my view.

Some remarks:

1. I can't import opml files, they are greyed out.

2. There are no notes for items.

The past few days there was an update for iThoughtsX -- I don't recall if opening OPML worked before the update, but it does today ;-)

(BTW, it's File > Open, there is no File > Import yet.)

Notes for items use the same panel that iThoughtsHD uses -- grab the handle just under the toolbar, drag it down, select a node, and enter your note at the top of the window in the notes panel.

I downloaded Version 1.2 (1.2.2615) today and did a reinstall; sorry no opml import, opml files are greyed out.

Thank you very much, I missed this!

Hmmm. Strange. There's no "Import" command in iThoughtsX 1.2, but over here File > Open will import OPML without problems. Not all OPML files are created equal. The OPML standard is loose - but I just now tried File > Open with OPML exported form DEVONthink, Tinderbox, NovaMind 5, and OmniOutliner Pro 3. All of these opened in iThoughtsX.

Don't want to be a flack - but there's an update to iThoughtsX that has a "fix: .opml association".

Not sure what sort of problems you're experiencing wih OPML, but if it has to do with the export/importing of notes, check out this message: http://www.outlinersoftware.com/messages/viewm/18334

Apparently there are at least two standards for notes, and one can fix an OPML file by replacing all occurences of one notation with the other in any editor. The difference comes down to a single underscore:

note=”

vs.

_note=”

Fired by all this enthusiasm, I've finally shelled out for iThoughts - very nice, I must say. But I was even more intrigued to find that a nice workflow has been written for exporting formatted Markdown text directly from Editorial (on iOS) into iThoughts (on iOS). You'll find it here:

With v1.3 of iThoughtsX opml import (and export) does work at last.

There's an update to iThoughtsX (Mac App Store) that supports importing Scapple and CMAP documents.
