Something like Notemap would be fine, but I need to easily and quickly select branches of the outline to save or print, which I haven’t been able to do in Notemap.

Not sure I fully understand your criteria but Natara Bonsai allows you to print or export zoomed-in or expanded branches only. You could create your own “template” by creating a regular file adding the required content. Bonsai reopens any files not closes when the app is restarted, so it could be used as a template.
If you are after printing/exporting the outline with particular formatting, Bonsai also allows you to create your own export template, but it requires dealing with some “mark-up” (there are instructions in the Help file).
If you require an outliner with inline notes, Outline 4D is similar to Notemap. You can add different rich text formatting to each hierarchical level (and create a file that you can use as your template), you can create custom-visibility for branches and levels and only print/export those.

Actually Bonsai might also allow you to just use a category (in a column) or other ways (keywords, status, type, priority, specific phrase) to filter the items/branches that you want to print/export.

If you’re fine with cloud apps.
Workflowy (requires registration) hover on the right button and export. Also supports cloning
Text 2 Mindmap (no registration) PDF and PNG only
This is clunky but you get a truer boiler plate: http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/TheFormLetterMachine/
If you want to permanently move away from NoteMap though, I don’t know of a decent alternative but the character styles for this program makes it my preferred Windows freeware for just copy pasting text and turning it into an outline. Be warned though, I don’t really print many outlines and I have no idea if you need multiple fonts which as the link says it only supports one: http://www.yeahwrite.com/about.shtml
If you are not familiar with the Hipster PDA, it may be worth checking out. This is the opposite of printing a branch. Instead you print a fill-up form and then fill them with text:

The fastest way to preview things is to use the online Pocketmod: http://www.pocketmod.com/v2/

Can’t do a cloud app.
I downloaded the donation coder program a long time ago, and it didn’t work out, don’t remember why. I think I will take another look though, my need is greater now than in the past.
I am very familiar with the Hipster PDA, as I run my life with 3x5 cards. It is not a computer program though. Maybe you were thinking of something else.
Bonsai needs checking out.
Thanks all, still looking!
