I know many of you are enthusiastic outliner users on the iOS platform, devoted to such stalwarts as Carbonfin Outliner or OmniOutliner. But do cast another eye (if you haven’t looked at it for a while) over the latest version of Cotton Notes, which has just been updated again. The developer is rapidly improving this app, which now includes Markdown editing, a built-in task management system, support for images (which automatically appear as banners if you hoist a particular branch topped by a note containing an image), favourites, attachments, geolocation etc. Plus a meticulously crafted interface which is really very elegant. Oh, plus tags and a nice powerful search function. It exports notes to Dropbox, Evernote and other repositories, too - in plain text or OPML, which is convenient if you’re using an OPML editor on other platforms.
All the management stuff (for searching, task management, favourites, attachments etc.) appears in a left-hand navigation bar on the iPad. The bar is context-sensitive, so if you hoist a particular branch, the different sections in the navigation bar automatically restrict themselves to the contents of that branch (and subbranches). It’s a very simple, very effective solution to an issue that most task managers don’t handle very well.
It’s become one of my very favourite apps on my iPad, because like all the best iPad apps, it’s genuinely fun to use. And it’s becoming more fun to use all the time! And no, nobody is paying me to write this!
Cheers,
Bill
