The digital dog-ears, ‘Bookmark Docs’, will be featured in ‘Bits du Jour’ within the next days. It has reached version 4, and supports more that a dozen applications so far.

Pereh, could you or anyone else who uses this software say a bit more about its benefits and how you use this in your workflow? Thanks.

I did give Bookmark Docs a try (as it’s on sale today) but I wasn’t immediately won over. It’s based on an interesting idea but I think the execution isn’t quite there. It would be nice to have an app for collecting bookmarks that lead you back to specific PDF pages, website sections, and other document pages. However, I didn’t think there were sufficient features to organise the information once you have masses of information (thousands of bookmarks).
One could even argue that for serious research you probably don’t want to go back to the same source too many times. Rather, once you’ve consumed the given PDF, website, etc., you’d want to write your own summary and extract important quotes, images etc. and store them in a proper database, so you don’t have to go back and duplicate your work again. Nevertheless, it would still be nice if there was an easy way to reference quotes etc. straight back to the given PDF page, website section etc. but I don’t know of many PIMs that can do that (easily).

Here’s a thought: If your PIM has the capability of entering a note, then to “boookmark” a passage in a saved item, just copy a “string of words” at the beginning of the passage and in your note put: “Search on: “string of words” . Then you can do exactly that to find the passage.

I wanted to use it to browse through new material as it comes in, like video and audio tutorials, audio conferences, help files, new docu etc. Just make a bookmark in the file and return whenever you want.
However, there are still bugs in version 4 and I decided to wait some more.
