Graham,
Excellent question! I tend to have two outliners open all day: ActionOutline for general, more ephemeral notes, and UltraRecall for project management. As I create project-related documents in other organizers (for example, mind maps in MindManager, brainstorms in Brainstorm, data analysis in MyInfo, InfoHandler, or WikidPad) I save them and then link them into the appropriate project in UR.
Since I’m such a chronic CRIMPer, I have a WikidPad file that I use primarily as a software database. I have a page for each application I use and/or have evaluated. I keep track of major bugs, thoughts, opinions, uses, evaluation results, and communication with the vendor.
Every time I see something interesting said here about an app with which I’m not closely familiar, I look in my WikidPad wiki to see my experience with that app. I’ve evaluated quite a bit of software over the years, and I can’t possibly remember it all.
Regards,
Wes
