I just ran into this 2-pane outliner and am giving it a try. Anybody else tried it before?
Here is the description:
A two-pane rich-text outliner, that helps you organize your information in a hierarchical tree structure
The Guide is an easy-to-use application that will allow you create documents ("guides") which inherently have a tree (which you can modify as you please) and text associated with each node of the tree.
The text itself is of the rich-text variety, and the editor allows you to modify the style and formatting of the text (fonts, bold, italics etc).
It features print, preview, export to RTF, minimize to system tray, full text-editing features, rearrangement of nodes, full-document search, hyperlinks; on top of being slick, fast, lightweight and open source.

It has been mentioned a few times in the past; it was briefly discussed here http://www.outlinersoftware.com/topics/viewt/644
