Citavi is a powerful reference manager for Windows that previously was available only in German. The new beta version, now in English, looks to be quite powerful, and it includes a “Knowledge Organizer” module that allows for hierarchical organization of notes. Sort of like a modern IdeaMason.

Citavi is amazing, if you work with bibliographic references. I’m still just learning it, but it is remarkably powerful. The fact that you can take notes and create knowledge structures is what I have long been looking for. I mourned the demise of IdeaMason. I’ve tried Bibliographix and some similar applications, but found them too buggy. Citavi seems rock-solid, so far. The workflow I am working (or flowing) toward is: Citavi to Scrivener to Word. (It might have to be Citavi to Word to Scrivener to Word. Still working that bit out.) I’ll post more about Citavi when I’ve mastered it.

Thanks, David. I can’t believe we’ve missed this one. Setting the academic reference manager aside, Citavi is the most sophisticated knowledge manager of any we’ve discussed. Multiple edit windows while previewing multiple random nodes. The previews can be notes, documents, PDFs, images, web sites, videos, all stacked up in a column for your reference. Just extraordinary. On top of that, it’s free of charge if you use fewer than 100 (!) bibliographic references. That doesn’t, far as I can tell, limit your outline nodes, documents, attachments or URLs, only your fielded refs.
The notes editor lives in a cluttered form, encouraging choppy writing rather than fluid. I’m hoping there’s a workaround. Other than that, Citavi is killer. It’s a must-try.

Very impressive indeed. I was interested to learn that a Team version is in the works. It’s becoming for me quite important to be able to collaborate with others on the same material and very few of the information managers we discuss here have that ability. I inquired about the Team pricing and as I understand it will be slightly higher than the Pro version—and it will be possible to upgrade to Team from Pro.
