Greetings. I can also recommend to look at new outliner - Techno Notes Manager (http://www.td-soft.net).
It is not so powerful as some leader software of that kind, but it is free and has very friendly and easy interface.
I am tried some such programs before, but they have ugly interface or cost a lot of money, that is unacceptable for my small needs.
So I recommend to look at it.
Program features:
- Rich text editing with formatting, tables, images, hyperlinks, etc.
- Unlimited hierarchical structure
- Categorize data with unlimited tags
- Support file attachment to any tree item
- Single file database with encryption support
- Spell check support
- Export items to RTF and HTML formats or print them
- Minimization to tray
- Portable mode support

Just checked it out - “Techno Notes Manager” is really nice and clean, with a modern interface.
Main features I’m missing (not only in TNM, but in many outliners): Tabs.
Tabs could be used as the top level of the hierarchy or for holding more than one file.
Without tabs, you have to squeeze everything into one hierarchy and always drill one level deeper.
Another feature I’d like to see is the combination of tags (usually with “and”) as filter. E.g. in the tag panel, tags could be displayed in a hierarchy with subtabs (of course, you can drill down to a node in different ways then in the tag).
With a small number of notes, the application is just fine as it is, but with a larger number of notes, you can’t handle your database without these features.

New version released. Add full-text search and fixed some bugs.

Does it have hoist feature? Without a hoist a program such as this decreases in practical usefulness.
