Richard -
PocketThinker - a Windows outliner with Outlook integration and a PPC as well as a desktop version - has columns. You can get a trial at: http://www.pocketthinker.com/
As its help file states in relation to the columns feature: “You can enter notes, set target dates, start dates, end dates, alphabetic priorities, numeric priorities and progresses for an outline item. You can also attach Outlook link or URL link to an item. These are called “attributes” for an item.”
PocketThinker is a comparatively recent entry into the Windows outliner stakes, and still has some issues: Outlook integration can sometimes be flakey, and the outliner has some way to go. The developers, however, are very responsive and have forums for all their products. I’ve been using it on some small recent, and rather like it.
Let us know if any of the programs mentioned helped you.

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. I was afraid that something about file structure and such things in the PC world, as Steve Z explained, might be at the root of the my difficulties in finding what seems to me like pretty basic outline/table structure and functions. But it sounds like there are some programs that are worthwhile for me to check out. I’ve tried Ariadne and ListPro and they didn’t have the functionality I seek. I’ll take a look at MyInfo, ADM, Ecco Pro, and Pocket Thinker.
If there are any other thoughts/suggestions out there, let me know.
Thanks again!
Richard
