I have just come across this nice wiki that has annotated lists of digital research tools in various categories, though strangely there is no standalone category for outliners…

Which makes me wonder if outlining is really just a minority interest for folks whose brains happen to work hierarchically or if it is indeed an integral part of the writing process that all writers must be engaging in somehow. I always wondered why the market for outliner software does not have higher visibility. It took me years just to stumble upon this forum and develop my modest collection of outliners…
Natara Bonsai is a case in point. It works perfectly as a standalone outliner yet it is only marketed as an extension to the Palm handheld software, targeting Palm geeks like myself (even though sadly the Palm world seems to be in decline, unless Palm Pre performs a miracle). So it would be pretty difficult for a non-Palm user to even find out that Bonsai exists and how good it really is…
