For iOS and macOS, with Windows coming soon.
“iA Writer 7.2 offers tree view with drag and drop and easy renaming….You can drag the different chapters into one master file. In the master file you can reorder the different parts at will. Command-click gets you right to the file. Stats will show the characters, words, reading time, etc of all documents combined….”
And a hint of things to come…
“Tree view is the first step toward a document outline. Tree view is the technical foundation for offering a more detailed view of the document structure. All we can say for now is that it will work very much like tree view, just inside the document.”

That’s a nice update to iA Writer.
I’ve recently done some outlining with my word processor. I use (Mac only) Mellel, which I think handled the task nicely. Many word processors would work as well.
My outlining style set has four levels of headers. I could probably do with two levels. For narratives, I like more of a series of screen cards than a hierarchy.
The top level was configured to include a leading page break. The lower levels of headings (auto-titles) just added a line break.
A new top level heading opened a new page. Lower levels filled out the page.
It worked well. I had a new playground for each new top level heading. The document navigator, what Mellel calls the Outline, let me drag and drop reorder the sections of the document, promoting/demoting works, and while folding doesn’t fold the document text, the outline topics can be folded.
I’m looking forward to iA Writer’s further development of the new tree view. IA Writer is already a polished and very pleasant editor. Good to hear there’s more to come.
