It looks like an incremental update on the outside. Internally it's said to have improvements to handle large timelines. When I get time, I think I'll dummy up a CSV file with a few thousand events and see how it handles it.

I don't use Aeon as much as I thought I would for creative writing. That's not to say it hasn't been useful. For some projects I have to keep correspondence chains in relationship to stuff happening. Aeon has been great for that.

Has anyone used Aeon timeline for project management, i.e. not for plotting a story? I am tempted to give it a try, but all information online is about using it for writing, with the exception of one case study on their website. I'm looking at this one, or Hyperplan, or sticking with my trusted InfoQube, for managing a programme of projects for a client. The reason this one looks attractive is the timeline view itself, being quite visual. But it doesn't seem to have a Kanban view, which Hyperplan does have.

So if you've used it, I would love to hear about your experiences.

This isn't a conventional project, but it probably qualifies as an alternate use of Aeon.

I'm one of many involved in an extended, months-long dialog with a tax appraisal office in disarray.

Every note, public meeting agenda, email, letter, published article, everything went into Devonthink where it could be organized and linked to. Events went into Aeon with links to supporting items in Devonthink. Where more than one item supported an Aeon event, links to either groups or tags were used.

It's helpful to have an easy view of the flow of events. Probably more helpful to me than the tax folks, but I have to have some secret weapons. They are great - in the sense of size - and I am small.

Thank you for sharing. That's a very interesting and creative use for it. Sorry to hear that the cause is a dispute, since they can be very frustrating.

Do you also use it for planning things that need to still be done, or purely for the overview of what has already happened?

That's a good idea, plugging in scheduled things. I haven't done that, but I can see where it might help.

I gave Aeon a spin, but found it too slow for entering lots of dated items quickly. Did a bit more trialling of programs and I'm now going to use Quire for a while.

Aeon's timeline view does require multiple steps per event. The spreadsheet view is quicker, like filling out cells by typing and tabbing.

My favorite, though, is to add fields for start, stop, observers, participants, etc. to Devonthink. A metadata overview export from Devonthink will then import without modification into Aeon. I've done the same thing with Curio, using a script to grab Aeon data from note attachments.

Back when I used OmniOutliner, I would sometimes do the same thing, using additional columns in OO for the Aeon fields.

You can also put your Aeon fields in columns in any spreadsheet you like to use and import that into Aeon. Back in the version 2 days, that was the way I populated timelines.

But you're right. Aeon has some friction. It gets more "worth it" if you have a need to put events in mind maps or build a narrative from the events.

Timeline Maker Pro was my favorite timeline years ago, but the price! I was either given a license or budgeted one as part of a project. The guy I was working for was nutty about timelines.

I love Aeon's timeline, it's so flexible. True CRIMPer that I am, I will need to find another use case to give me an excuse to buy it.
