Another interesting outliner along the lines of Writer’s Blocks is StoryView http://www.screenplay.com/products/storyview/index.html. It’s also based on the index card style approach but is tied into a timeline (or page-count) interface. The GUI is kind of structured like a video/audio/MIDI editing system. There are numerous ways to auto (or manually) connect events (note blocks) to the timeline and use this for all sorts of filtering. The events can be nested into one another on several customizable tracks/timelines. There are also very good export commands that are available.
The program is primarily directed at screenwriters but seems to work just as well for other creative writing tasks, i.e. novels, short stories etc. I strongly suggest that anyone interested in creative writing check out the downloadable demo of this program.
