The first versions of InfoSelect were great; small (but sizeable) windows you could open up for taking random notes, and very quick search capability. Then they decided to make it an outliner and personal infomation manager. I thought the first versions were far superior. I doubt that you will be able to find the earlier versions anywhere.
askSam is a great text-base for keeping and searching random bunches of text, but it is no lightweight utility. You might try it out (I believe they have a 60-day version for free).
There is also a lightweight version of electronic post-it notes, but I didn’t care much for it.
