What outliner should I use for Windows today (98 and 2KPro). Frankly, I can't justify the cost of Frontier.

In the very old days, I used Grandview (and PC Outline before that), and my wife still uses it! In fact, this question is mainly for her benefit, though I'd be ecstatic to have one too.

What is Frontier? I have never heard of it.

One of the most flexible outling programs ever has (from what I see) never been discussed ASHTON TATE's Framework. I used it for many years. It could do just about anything (it was highly programmable) Great marketing slogan Framework for Mindwork. After that I switched to ECCO and I have never needed anything else. Ecco is now defunct but I can't see where I would need anything else. There is a lot of goodwill for ECCO. It fits the bill for the best Windows outliner. There is a user group for Ecco. Check E-groups.

Here is a list of my 3 favorite Windows outliners. I use each one for a different task as neither of them are an all-in-one solution for my needs.

1. MaxThink (DOS) http://www.maxthink.com
Great for its speed and numerous unique creativity boosting tools. This program is really not intended for formatting text but excels at organizing it. It's a bit quirky (like it's creator) and takes awhile to get used to.
- I like to use this app mostly for brainstorming.

2. Inspiration (Win) http://www.inspiration.com
Good outliner with a lot of useful features. It can toggle between outline and diagram views. The only thing I don't like is the appearance of the interface. IMO this is probably the best currently available straightforward outliner for the Windows platform.
- I prefer to use this app for organizing and formatting my writings.

3. Info Select (Win) http://www.miclog.com
This is really more of a "free-form database" app than it is an outliner, though you can easily write outlines with it. It has a few quirky aspects, like removing some formatting from text that is pasted into it. The new 6.0 Beta has some very interesting features.
- Because of it's ability to handle graphics, HTML files and external files and it's superior search capabilities, I find this app very useful for organizing research material.
