Outside of y’all here, there doesn’t seem to be too much interest in outliners as thinking tools; instead, the emphasis seems to be on outliners as an instrument in presenting a finished product with the right numbers, letters, and Roman numerals for each line (which doesn’t make sense; outlining has always been an organizational tool for me).
When PC’s began to emulate Macs, they seemed to go for the Mac’s look and feel while ignoring its functionality. I’m not sure the average windows user would even begin to try to learn DOS-based MaxThink; using MaxThink with a menu-driven windows interface would make it too slow for me to even consider, but that seems to be the only way an average windows user could tackle it. The concept of user-friendliness sometimes compromises deep functionality. I have trouble finding lesser-known windows software that even comes with a manual. I have to print my own manual from their Adobe Acrobat file, and some don’t even have that, telling you to use the help files. So, I keep one laptop computer for DOS programs and struggle with the Y2K bug while using it.
Any similar feelings out there?
