I have been a MaxThink user and fan for about 15 years. Every once in a while I get an e-mail about a new grandchild, that is, a new MaxThink user recruited by someone whom I introduced to the program. I think there’s nothing else like it, and believe that in some ways it anticipated the World Wide Web, which is navigated in a fashion that is very similar to a MaxThink outline with the default heading plus one level display.
I recently received an e-mail from Neil promising a free Windows beta by the end of this month. Since this beta has been promised for years, I’m not holding my breath. Still, it could be that Microsoft is providing the needed push with its DOS-hostile Windows Me. At the moment, the maxthink.com website and mailserver both appear to be down.
If Neil doesn’t come through, I wonder whether an enterprising soul will write some scripts for Radio Userland that would make its behavior more like that of MaxThink. I don’t much care for Radio Userland in its default configuration, but a cross-platform (Win/Mac), web-savvy outliner with modern features and MaxThink-like navigation would be very cool.
