I’ve started a manilla site dedicated to making Ecco interoperable with modern computing (as opposed to, pointedly, Visual Basic desktop apps).
My impetus is the desire to have Web access to my Ecco calendar and phonebook—I’ve been working in a “virtual office” situation lately, and I don’t really want to lug around a laptop just to look up phone numbers.
While I’ll be developing in Perl and with a Unix Webserver, I’d be delighted to work in parallel with people developing on different platforms. While Frontier wouldn’t meet my needs, it might be an excellent environment for developing such a project, since it contains both the DDE interface to access Ecco and the Web server.
If this project attracts interest beyond my immediate needs, I could imagine creating a hosting situation, where a desktop app syncs with a server app. Could this be a job for SOAP?
Just to clarify, my personal agenda (you should pardon the expression) in this project is to (1) access my Ecco data remotely and (2) pick up some skill sets along the way.
If you’re at all interest in joining the ride—or even just in being notified if this ever gets off the ground—drop by http://ecco.weblogs.com.
