I prefer to think of tree-based “outliners” as “table of contents-ers.”
“Outlining” is OK, but topics vs notes is a pain. Try Jot+ or Skwyrul, both of which are in process of major enhancements.
You guessed it…I have a math Ph.D.
Jot+ is as easy to “dump” info into, but it doesn’t have many other of the capabilities IS does (e.g. graphics). The ability to fast search many IS files at once is, I believe, IS’s strongest point. To do something similar, I use separate file/text search programs. I probably would have kept IS if it had better formatting capabilities. The beta ver. 6 had features I’d never use except for the print preview. Jot + does well at printing.
