This is one of the papers in the Making the Macintosh archive at Stanford.
It was written in 1979, inspired by work that was developed in 1967 by Doug Engelbart and others at SRI.
It's interesting in the context of this forum as it appears to be describing an outliner. I believe it is nearly contemporaneous with ThinkTank.

Just to dig back a little further in time, here is a document authored by Doug Engelbart back in 1966 which clearly describes an outliner. Begin reading around paragraph 1.c (the document is labelled in the format of an outline).
There is a great deal more at this site that relates to Engelbart's work, but I wanted to post this one as soon as I found it. Don't ask me why I get excited about this, I just do.
