It depends on what your main focus is. If you want calendaring, phone list, and some outlining capability, Ecco Pro 4.011 is best. However it no longer is undergoing development. It is very powerful, and you can download a trial version from ZD Net. I picked up my copy at a computer show for $40. There is a VERY active newsgroup devoted to it. Look under the Netmanage newsgroups: netmanage.products.ecco.discussion.
Inspiration 6 is an outliner that converts outlines into diagrams which you can then revise. It does a good job of converting a tab indented text or RTF file into an outline. So, if one can export to that Insp. probably will do a good import job. It has hoisting and some other outline rearrangment features, but not “the full set.” Try it out by downloading from http://www.inspiration.com. No calendar or other PIM features.
Jot is a basic tree-structured outline. (Outline tree on left; notes/long text on right.) It is not sophisticated and has only rudimentary outline rearrangement features, but is very user-friendly and is an easy way to store info. Copy items or suboutlines and print. http://www.kingstairs.com
Skwyrul is also tree-oriented. It has more features than Jot, but is still missing a couple of important ones. Only one file open at a time. Free from http://www.asw.ndirect.co.uk/careware.htm. It is NOT keyboard oriented at all. You have to be a “mouser.” The power is in the right-click. Gets new features on a regular basis.
There are others, but I either found then inferior to what I’ve told you or they crashed my machine. Also, there are some with many structured features…too many for my liking. Find hundreds at ZD Net.
