BTW, as I also posted in the Mellel thread mentioned above, I created a (Word 97) mockup of the featureset I meant by the OP:

As also mentioned in my post in the Mellel forum, the screenshot does not show exactly the desired function: The footnotes match the body text, but the selected part of the outline does not. This means that the outline and split “normal” view aren’t synchronized; probably conflicting changes in both “views” could also overwrite each other (?), make the app crash or whatever. I didn’t really try it.
