Interestingly, Outlook itself reached version 2003 before getting some of the features I came to love in Calypso and consider essential; here’s my short list:
- Ability to download only headers of messages
- Display status of messages, i.e. whether they are still in the server or not
- Bulk send, i.e. mail messages to a list, separately to each recipient
- View only text portion of messages, i.e. do not display HTML/RTF. Here lies the only Courier enhancement that I find really useful; it can strip HTML codes and display only the text content, for messages that don’t have a separate plain text component.
- Re-send messages, rather than having to forward them.
As far as I know Outlook still doesn’t have many of these; same goes for Thunderbird which I tried but I found moving/copying its mailbox files around very cumbersome (something which I need to do fairly often).
One thing that Outlook does have and I wish other mail clients copied, is drag-n-drop and true database operation, i.e. you can link to a message from an external application just by drag-n-dropping; IDEA! and UltraRecall can integrate with Outlook alone for this precise reason.
