People using MS Word to create large and complex documents for publication purposes, might want to take a look at the plug-in utilities offered by The Editorium ( http://www.editorium.com/ )

Here's a few examples [Disclaimer; the hyped descriptions have been copied from the website and I cannot verify or deny them]

DEXter — the first truly professional indexing program for Microsoft Word documents

ListFixer converts automatic numbers and bullets into fixed numbers and bullets—or vice versa

NoteStripper strips embedded, automatically-numbered notes as numbered text to the end of a document (while retaining italics and other formatting)

QuarkConverter converts edited Word documents into XPressTag files that can be imported into QuarkXPress while retaining style names and character formatting such as italic and bold.

MS Word to create large and complex documents

I may have mentioned this before, but this is an essential tool for large docs with Word. Main function is to replace the "file corrupting-disaster waiting to happen" master Document feature, but has many other useful fetaures.

It may also be worth mentioning Open office for long docs, which would appear to be more capable and safer than Word for long document semi-DTP type work.
