Alx,
Well oddly, Open Office uses _underline_ with its auto correct feature to give underlining rather than italics. I never use underlining, but I use italics a lot (scientific names of plants and animals) so the italics works well for me.
Having said that, I haven’t actually tried it out as I got carried away with the HTML tags, which are much more versatile. But at present only work in Open Office.
