Graham,
Now that you are considering various compromises, may I suggest something rather radical? Why not save the Word files as HTML (from within Word)? This will maintain the tables and export graphics as individual files in separate directories.
The HTML and associated files can be read / imported / searched by most software you’ve been testing and more.
If Office 2006 were here I’d actually suggest saving in XML but it will be a while before this is standardised; when it is, I think it will make a great difference were we to have the same conversation.
Last but not least, an alternative would be to save Word files as RTF and see if they can be imported to MyBase or whatever. Files may be larger, especially if they include graphics, but tables will be maintained. Furthermore, RTF files can be compressed significantly.
