Graham,
I have used AbiWord mostly for papers (less than 30 pages) and other shorter documents with footnotes, and it performed well for me. I don't think I ever tried to import a word document into it. But I did save files in rtf and then opened them in Word without problems. (As you know, Word is used by most everyone and you just have to have it to exchange documents.)
I guess AbiWord is O.K. for light work, but it isn't ready for prime time.
Thank you very much for making me realize that.

Graham,
Given what you said, I decided to test it with a fairly large file, the manuscript of a book I wrote with word four years ago (about 540 pages, with many footnotes). The doc file is about 1.9 MB. Word 2003 opened it without missing a beat, about 7 seconds or so, I then saved it to rtf, opened it with Word, which took about twice as long, but it presented no problem. The rtf file is about 2.44 MB.
Trying to open it with AbiWord was impossible. It took more than 120 seconds before the hour glass disappeared. But clicking anywhere on the document pane or trying to save it would freeze the program every time. I tried five times, rebooting in between, etc.
