The biggest issues for me have been the way it handles graphics (badly) and the export to Word, which is a bit mixed.
As always I have sorted out some work arounds, as the basic concept is very good and I really enjoy using it, but in the end I was unconvinced that it was worth the effort. Having said that I keep on going back to it.
Some aspects are complex, but workable, and others I just never got my head around. Ibidem has no export facililty so if you need to get references out, you have to have something else that reads Ibidem file, which can then export in the format you need.
There is a 60 day trial, and the only way you can decide on whether NB is for you, is to use it as much as possible in that period.
The integration between iIbidem, Orbis and NB, make it a joy to use, but I was still ending up with a lot of Work in Word, before I could present my document as a report. For pure academic writing, or any writing where you are not producing camera ready copy then I can think of nothing better.
I was a member of the NB mailing list for at least a year before I bought my copy, and it is a very useful place to get a feel for the program and its issues.
At the end of the day, it is a very personal decision.
