Dear Charles,
First of all, happy new year and welcome to the active discussion; I hope “coming to the open” will be worth it for you as it’s been for many of us :-)
A couple of thoughts follow, tied to specific issues that you raise:
> What I really liked was that you marked up WHAT something is ... not how it should look. Then it is up to the computer to lay it out attractively.
This immediately reminded me of Formatting Solutions, a software provided as part of the Information Mapping courses. It’s not an outlining approach, rather a way to recognise the kind of information one wants to present, i.e. fact, structure, procedure, etc and present it in a suitable format. Find out more at

> I’ve even built a Word macro so I can write in Brainstorm and provide hints
I would strongly suggest that you share this at the Brainstorm forum ( http://www.brainstormsw.com/phpBB2/index.php ). David and Marck are always open to new ideas re Brainstorm usability. I think your approach could be combined very nicely with their Word outline macro.
> I know computers can do a good job in placing text and graphics TeX can do it.
In the past, I suggested combining TeX with Brainstorm; however, no Brainstorm user responded to a related announcement at the forum. I personally believe that the potential would be huge; but it needs work.
That’s it for now
