For all it’s worth, I tried them all. The best alternative to MS-Word seems to me AbiWord.

It’s free, it’s fast, and it does footnotes (in fact, both footnotes and endnotes at the same time—something that MS-Word can’t do). It also includes grammar checking as of the last version and does outlining of sorts (much better than Word, in any case. It also saves “rtf” and it feels a lot less bloated than most).
