I used to use MyBase fairly extensively up to three years ago, when I was the publications director for a college. I liked it because I could put together electronic catalogs of the many permutations of our curricula, and then could distribute them to offices around campus becuase MyBase allows you to create run-time data-structures. For this task, a tree-based information manager was perfect, and MyBase is a good choice. It has been a few years since I used MyBase, but it hasn’t received many upgrades during that time—though it sounds as if one is in the works. I stopped using it because I didn’t have that same need after leaving my job at the college. Also, I found MyBase a little quirky when it came to handling formatting of text—I don’t recall the exact problems, but I believe they involved a clunkiness to the operation of changing fonts and styles that was slow and cumbersome. The other thing that I didn’t like so much about MyBase is its reliance on Plug-Ins for a lot of its functionality. Plug-Ins sound like a good idea, but when you need half a dozen or more to get full function from a program, it begins to become somewhat confusing to make sure you keep them up to date. In addition, some of the more useful ones—specifically, the one that allows download and storage of web pages—you have to pay for. In my opinion, Ultra Recall and MyInfo are both stronger programs.
