Some advice on software needed

I know I should alrady know where to start with this, but I am having a bit of brain dead session.

When doing a statistical analysis I usually end up using several different programs, which give me dozens of numerical tables and dozens of graphs and charts. Some of the programs are OLE servers and some are not. All support copying and pasting tables and charts into other programs.

I want a single program to try and keep track of all these charts and tables - but I don't really know what I want. It has to be frugal on resources, it should ideally have some sort of send to clipping tool like the Zooter, but which works with graphics, and it should support OLE, for when its available.

If I have saved a graphic as opposed to copied and pasted it, then I should be able to link to it from the same program. I need to be able to add some text to go with each chart or table and I need to be able to paste from the program into Word. I also need some sort of tree based structure to have a top level for roject and then sub levels each holding charts/tables for different parts of the analysis.

Now I know that there are dozens of programs that fit this need, but they all seem overally complex, or not complex enough.

Given the vast experience here of outliner/tree program, has anyone any suggestions. Free would be good, but I would be happy to look at anything suggested, and keen to see suggestions for programs I may have already tried, to encourage me to give them a second look.

Many thanks

Graham

Graham,

Don't know if I'm aware of any program that meets all your requirements, but I would suggest looking at MyInfo by Milenix (www.milenix.com) which comes close and costs $50 US. For free software, take a look at NeoMem (www.neomem.org), which has a lot of what you're looking for (although I'm unsure how it works with OLE objects). Some other options to consider:

Jot+ (www.kingstairs.com) $30

ActionOutline (www.greenparots.com) $40

MyBase (www.wjjsoft.com) $40 (plus $20 for the Web capture plug in)

Hope this helps a little. Let us know what you decide upon.

Graham,

I think the first question you need to answer based on your actual needs is whether you really prefer to have an info manager which "internalises" information such as MyInfo or a structure of links to external files; in the latter case a program like IDEA! or Zoot might suit your needs, as perhaps would FileNotes which now supports virtual folders.

In the former case I would definitely suggest trying out UltraRecall 1.4, currently on Beta, soon to be officially released. OLE support is the best I've seen, import / export is getting better and better, and the program can maintain both an internal copy of each imported file and a link to the original.

What about Black Hole Organizer?

Graham,

Might OneNote be an option? It has a quite flexible management of graphics. Don't know, though, if it handles OLE.

Graham,

I am not sure but perhaps the free version of Net Snippets might fit your need:
http://www.netsnippets.com/compare.htm
They have three different versions (free, standard, professional).

Further, look at ScreenHunter:

A happy New Year!
