> How would you rate File Notes Organizer in comparison to IDEA!? It seems that is is also based on “externalisation” concept.
It’s a very different approach; it’s rather like a file manager companion than a database in itself. That said, it offers a “virtual folders” feature where one can keep files from various locations.
I think one should choose a product like FNO if more than 90% of their information is kept in external files, i.e. Word / Excel documents, PDFs, Access Databases etc.
At the other end, a product like UltraRecall is ideal for someone who maintains a large nummber of diverse snippets of information, contacts, web pages, relatively small documents etc and would ideally want to carry them around as a single file.
At mid position, I would expect people to choose something like Zoot or IDEA! if a significant part of their info consists of relatively small notes, but they also have a regular need to access data from large external files.
In my case, I started with an all-in-one info manager (Hyperclip, which is now obsolete) and moved on to a better one (UltraRecall) where I maintain all my short-term project information (descriptions, contacts, tasks, reports etc). I use IDEA! to build my permanent knowledge base, organising my growing library of large PDFs.
For such a library, I could use something like FNO; nevertheless I prefer a database-oriented product as I expect to be putting more and more notes and ideas into my knowledge base.
