Steve,
From what I’ve read till now, I’d find IDEA! Personal Edition, which should cost less than $30 covering most of your needs, judging by the other programs you are considering; however, a significant handicap in that edition is the lack of a full text search (see http://sycon.de/eng/res/versionen_idea.html ) which, however can be handled by Zoot as long as you are accessing the same files with both programs.
Overall, I’d say that the main advantage of Zoot and IDEA! over most other programs discussed here is that they don’t seek to “internalise” all available information, but provide effective tools to access external files. As I find myself gathering plenty of huge PDFs, it is clear that UltraRecall can’t cover my information mapping needs.
IDEA! for example, as mentioned earlier, can link to as many external files as one requires, regardless of their location (i.e. PC, network, CD etc). If one requires an independent copy of the database, IDEA! can find and gather all linked files and copy them to a new directory.
