Opera has always had a free version, except there was advertising on it. So if people are too cheap to buy a browser, but flock to Firefox in droves, why wouldn’t they have flocked to Opera’s free version with the little adverts? Or to the free non-ad version available for the last couple of months?
I have used Opera but went back to Firefox because it is more pleasant to use.
Sure, IE wasn’t free in the sense that the cost was built-in—but it was free in the sense that no one chose whether to have it or not based on whether it was free. In fact, in recent memory no one has had a choice whether to have it.
I think the issue isn’t really about whether FF is free or not—it’s about FF being better.
And, oh yes, doind a splendid marketing job.
