Do you mean than any outliner/database product or any product including browsers (such as Maxthon or iRider).
I don’t think IE was ever free. It is part of the Windows operating system, isn’t it? But yes, it is from the consumer’s standpoint free, because you’ve can’t avoid paying for it. But indeed, people _do_ use it—overwhelmingly. And nothing has come around that’s much better—not better enough for most people to pay for. Some law firms, however, have gone for the commercial IE shell, iRider.It seems the only browser innovative enough to have applied for a patent on some of the technology.
Opera only became free recently. It is safer, faster, and more standards-compliant than Firefox and includes an integrated e-mail client. If people were really interested in a better browsing experience, they _would_ have chosen Opera. They didn’t because it was NOT free, and the difference between Opera and IE wasn’t worth paying for—although it is a difference of greater magnitude than between IE and Firefox. That’s my take; anyway, the Opera case tends to cut in that direction.
