Derek asked about GV.
Have I used it for the entire writing process? Yes!!! In fact, I became so addicted to GV that I even created keyboard macros for entering printer codes so I could write math equations using it. (The equations printed correctly, but on-screen it looked like a mess!
I do have to admit, however, that I no longer compose with GV, ‘though I still sometimes use it as a PIM.
Here’s a real-life example of GV category/assignment usage. (This example is 16 years old, so I might not have it quite correct.) I assumed leadership of a previously failing project that had been requested by a U.S. Senate committee. Because the project had not progressed for several months, my management had to go to Capitol Hill every two weeks to report progress to two Senators or the GAO (formerly called the General Accounting Office, now Government Accountability Office). I was regularly asked to prepare a memorandum listing which agency offices we had met with, when, and what was discussed.
I kept notes of each meeting in one GV outline. I also created a Category called “Offices” and, as “Assignments,” added the name of each office we met with. Creating the lists then took about five minutes work + print time.
If you use Categories/Assignments, read the manual, as there are several ways to do it, and you have to select a menu or key option to semi-automatically update things when you add new outline items.
If you haven’t yet done it, look at settings/key options/customize. You will find functions that are not on any menu.
